Here's something your doctor isn't telling you.

There is a single biological process that connects almost every health complaint I see in men over 40 — the stubborn belly fat, the afternoon brain fog, the joint pain that showed up out of nowhere, the declining testosterone, the creeping blood pressure, the fatigue that coffee can't fix anymore.

Why Inflammation Is KPI #2 in My Clinical Practice

It tanks your testosterone. Inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha) directly suppress the HPG axis — the hormonal cascade responsible for testosterone production. I've seen men with Total T in the 400s whose testosterone climbed to 700+ just by resolving inflammation. No TRT required.

It destroys your cardiovascular system. Forget total cholesterol for a moment. Elevated hs-CRP and oxidized LDL create arterial damage that leads to plaque formation. Inflammation is the match. Cholesterol is just the bandage your body sends to repair the damage.

It impairs gut function. Inflammation increases intestinal permeability — 'leaky gut' — which allows endotoxins into the bloodstream, creating more inflammation. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle that most doctors never identify because they never test for it.

It accelerates biological aging. Chronic inflammation shortens telomeres, impairs mitochondrial function, and increases oxidative stress. This is why two men who are the same chronological age can have a 15-year gap in biological age. The difference is usually inflammation.

The Markers Your Doctor Isn't Checking

Here's the problem: standard blood panels don't test for inflammation in any meaningful way. If your doctor runs a basic metabolic panel and a lipid panel, they have zero visibility into your inflammatory status.

In my practice, I'm looking at:

hs-CRP (High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein) — This is the gold standard inflammatory marker. Functional optimal is below 1.0 mg/L. Most labs say anything under 3.0 is 'normal.' I've had men come in at 2.8 — told they're fine — with inflammatory damage already underway. The difference between 0.5 and 2.8 is the difference between a body that's repairing and a body that's degrading.

Homocysteine — Elevated homocysteine is both an inflammatory and cardiovascular risk marker. Functional optimal is 6-8 µmol/L. The lab range goes up to 15. A man with homocysteine at 13 is told he's normal. I'm telling him his methylation is impaired, his cardiovascular risk is elevated, and his brain is taking damage.

Omega-6:Omega-3 Ratio — The standard American diet creates a ratio of 15:1 to 25:1 (omega-6 to omega-3). Optimal is 2:1 to 4:1. This imbalance alone drives a pro-inflammatory state that affects every cell in your body.

Ferritin, Fibrinogen, ESR — Additional markers that give us a complete inflammatory picture when evaluated together.
